Below is a summary field list for allegro L-format which is used to catalogue Chinese books in the Bodleian Library. Further information on each field together with examples can be found by clicking on the field numbers. This account aims to describe how bibliographical data is entered into the format, not how it is derived or composed from the materials to be catalogued; in this is we follow the rules of description prescribed in the first chapter of AACR2, with only minor departures (made over twenty years ago but now vindicated by RDA) to accommodate the peculiarities of Chinese books or to simplify the cataloguing process. In those fields where information is to be expressed in ISBD format, we follow the rules set out in IFLA's ISBD(M): International Standard Bibliographic Description for Monographic Publications.
* | repeatable | |
| | subfield (ASCII 124) | |
Subfields can be entered in any order, except for subfield |9, which always comes last.
_ | indicator (ASCII 95) | |
Indicators come at the end of the field, after all other data (including subfields) has been entered. The only ones currently in use are _j and _k which indicate that the romanisation in subfield |9 is in Japanese or Korean, and _d at the end of a shelfmark field which indicates that the item has been digitised.
